The Poet in You

Rising grades 4-6
July 20-24, 2026
1:00-3:00pm

Over the course of 5 two-hour seesions, students will explore the basics of rhyme, beat, and melodic elements of poetry. They will write their own poems, creating their own collection by the end of the week. Only those who love to write should take this class. Students will also be asked to write on their own outside of class.

The class will be taught by long-time Ottawa Hills resident (50 years!) Cynthia Millen. Writing under her pen name C.M. Millen, she has created children's books for over 40 years and had them published in the US, Ireland, and the UK by Houghton-Mifflin, Candlewick, Charlesbridge, and Walker Books UK. She has also taught middle school English and has let poetry workshops for students and teachers. She believes that humans are natually poetic and wants to encourage kids to write down the rhythm and words they hear.

Students should bring their favorite pencils. Notebooks will be provided.
